What Our Thrilled Customers Say About Our Hot Water System Service
Frequently Asked Questions About Hot Water Systems
You're looking at about 7-12 years for most systems, though some go longer if you're lucky. If your hot water system is 7+ years old and giving you grief regularly, it's probably time to call us.
There are a few dead giveaways that something's not right. Like your pilot light keeps dying on you, water pressure is low, there’s no hot water at all, or it's coming out scalding or freezing — none of that's normal.
The same goes if you've got water leaking from the tank, or that overflow pipe at the top won't stop running. Don't just hope it'll fix itself — these are all signs it’s time to call in a professional.
Honestly, it depends on your setup and how much hot water you use. Check out our guide to hot water system sizes to get a better idea of what might suit your household. We’ll have a look at your place and tell you what makes the most sense for your needs.
Not immediately — and not just because it's 2027. The rule only kicks in when your gas system reaches the end of its life and can't be repaired. From 1 March 2027, that replacement must be with an efficient electric unit (like a heat pump). Your existing system can keep running and be repaired in the meantime. If your system is 7+ years old, it's worth planning ahead now so you're not caught in a mid-winter emergency with limited options. For more info, check out the new electrification and efficiency standards and regulations for Victorian buildings.
The most common replacement is a heat pump hot water system — the government's preferred option because it's around three times more efficient than traditional electric. Electric resistance (element-style) systems are also compliant, but cost more to run. We'll recommend the right system for your home size, roof space, and budget — and help you maximise whatever rebates you're eligible for.
Yes — and right now they're among the most generous they've ever been. Eligible Victorian owner-occupiers can access the Solar Victoria Hot Water Rebate (up to $1,400 for locally made systems), Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) upfront discounts applied at point of sale, and federal Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs). Combined, these can offset $2,000–$2,700 or more of the upgrade cost. Note: the Solar Victoria rebate requires an eligibility letter before installation — call us before you do anything else and we'll walk you through it.
Yes. For rental properties, the rules are tighter. From 1 March 2027, at the start of any new lease, hot water systems that reach end-of-life must be replaced with efficient electric alternatives. There's no waiting period — it applies at the lease renewal trigger. We work with local landlords across the Mornington Peninsula and Bayside area to get compliant systems installed cleanly between tenancies.
Yes. If your gas hot water system breaks down and can be repaired, you're allowed to repair it — the rule only applies when the system has reached end of life and repair isn't possible. That said, if your system is already ageing, repeated repair callouts often end up costing more than a planned replacement with rebates. We'll give you an honest assessment of whether repair or replace makes more sense for your specific system.
